Film Festival: "Spies in the Cinema"
The Filmothèque du Quartier Latin, in collaboration with the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the European project DEMOSERIES, presents the Film Festival "Spies in the Cinema" that will take place from June 1 to 14, 2022. Select screenings will be accompanied by brief introductions and post-screening discussions with the DEMOSERIES team. On Monday, June 6, the special screening of La Sentinelle will include a discussion with the film’s director Arnaud Desplechin, moderated by Sandra Laugier and Thibaut de Saint-Maurice, and will be followed with a cocktail reception.

Festival Presentation
Secret agents, double agents, moles, men and women in the shadows... Since its appearance at the beginning of the 20th century, the figure of the spy has captured the imagination of the public and has became an essential prototype in cinema, brought to life by some of the greatest directors, from Josef von Sternberg, Samuel Fuller, Alfred Hitchcock, and Joseph L. Mankiewicz to Steven Spielberg, Éric Rochant, and Arnaud Desplechin. How can we explain the remarkable endurance of the espionage genre, which has also become quintessential to television series: Mission Impossible, The Prisoner, Le Bureau des légendes, Killing Eve, etc.? The multiple forms taken by spy fiction—and more broadly security fiction,—from comedy to science fiction, challenge the idea of a stable boundary between imagination and reality. From the Second World War to the Cold War, and to the “War on Terror,” the figure of the fictional spy has evolved in line with the developments in international relations and technology, revealing and informing geopolitical and societal evolution. Security fiction thus constitutes a precious resource for depicting and thinking about secret actions of the governments that are carried out in the name of citizens—and sometimes against them.
La Filmothèque du Quartier Latin, in collaboration with the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the European project DEMOSERIES, invites you to discover, or rediscover, these clandestine histories. The films presented as a part of the festival “Spies in the Cinema” reveal the extent to which the espionage genre has become part of contemporary public imagination and debate, and, in so doing, allow us to understand the participation of security fiction in the joint construction of ideas, affects, and policies.
On the festival’s program: conspiracies, disguises, moral conflicts, passions and betrayals, dark alleys and mysterious notes slipped into the yesterday’s newspaper.... Accompanied by regular introductory lectures and debates. Join us in spying on these classic spy characters from the shadows of the theatre. Just remember to turn off your cell phones, you never know who is spying on you...

L'équipe DEMOSERIES propose pour certaines séances de courtes introductions aux films projetés ou des débats. Présentation du festival
Agents secrets ou agents doubles, taupes, analystes, hommes et femmes de l'ombre... Depuis son apparition au début du XXe siècle et sa réactualisation permanente au gré des évolutions des relations internationales et de la technologie, la figure de l’espion captive le public tout en servant de grammaire aux plus grands réalisateurs, de Josef von Sternberg, Samuel Fuller, Alfred Hitchcock ou Joseph L. Mankiewicz à Steven Spielberg, Éric Rochant ou Arnaud Desplechin. Comment expliquer la remarquable pérennité du genre de l'espionnage, qui s'est aussi développé à travers les séries télévisées : Mission impossible, Le prisonnier, Le Bureau des légendes, Killing Eve, etc. ? Les multiples formes revêtues par les fictions d’espionnage, et plus largement les fictions sécuritaires, de la comédie à la science-fiction, ne les placent pas pour autant hors de la réalité du monde. De la Seconde Guerre mondiale à la Guerre froide, puis à la lutte contre le terrorisme, elles mettent au jour et informent les évolutions de la géopolitique et des sociétés, et constituent ainsi de précieuses ressources pour figurer et penser l’action secrète des États qui s’exerce au nom des citoyens – et parfois contre eux.
La Filmothèque du Quartier Latin, en association avec l'Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et le projet européen DEMOSERIES, vous invite à venir découvrir, ou redécouvrir, ces histoires clandestines. Les films présentés révèlent l’ampleur prise par le genre de l’espionnage dans les imaginaires et la délibération publique contemporaine, et permettent ce faisant de saisir sa participation à la construction conjointe des idées, des affects et des politiques menées.
Au programme : complots, déguisements, conflits moraux, passions et trahisons, allées sombres et mystérieuses notes glissées dans le journal de la veille.... Le tout agrémenté de conférences introductives et de débats. Rejoignez-nous alors pour espionner les espions dans l'ombre des salles. Pensez juste à éteindre vos téléphones portables, on ne sait jamais qui nous surveille...
