CALL FOR PAPERS:

(De-)Performing Gender in Popular Media International symposium

May 30-31, 2023
Maison de la Recherche de la Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris

Coordination:

Éric Maigret (IRMECCEN, Sorbonne Nouvelle) and Sandra Laugier (ISJPS, Panthéon Sorbonne)

A scientific conference on the contested transformation of gender identities and politics in media cultures.

The Universities of Sorbonne Nouvelle (IRMECCEN team) and Panthéon Sorbonne (UMR ISJPS) are organizing a symposium to launch their collaboration on gender issues in the framework of the Sorbonne Alliance.

Despite the abundance of research on the subject, the relationship between gender and media remains an innovative scientific project for several reasons. First, the complex nature and rapid evolution of media products, technology, and actors necessitates precise tracking of transformations in a media landscape where representations, forms, and production and consumption practices accumulate and juxtapose with new processes of remixing, sharing, co-creation, and contestation. Following the new wave of feminism spearheaded by the #MeToo movement and the long work of (self-) regulation of the media on the offered contents, it is necessary to analyze the coexistence of stereotyped images, which are always present on the screens, and of innovative and critical processes, which allow the coming to the foreground of women and minorities.

Popular culture, especially media culture, is regularly underestimated in comparison to academic culture, even though it plays an increasingly important role in the daily lives of people of all generations. The influence of a culture accessible to the greatest number of people has been multiplied in recent decades by digital technology (social networks and platforms). It plays a major role in the education of values and intergenerational communication and constitutes the aesthetic and moral background of feminist and democratic aspirations.

The colloquium aims to present and deepen research on the topic of the gendering of media representations. The participants will seek to grasp the plurality of visions presented in the media and in their uses through the processes of staging and representation in both textual and visual forms, at a time when reflection is limited, difficult, yet very real. The symposium will prioritize two main areas: popular music and television series.

The goals of the symposium are:

- to deepen the methodological aspects of these themes and research fields by approaching them from a cross-disciplinary perspective. While focusing on the construction and limits of gender performance, the symposium will move beyond the concept of performativity to offer an empirical inquiry into reception and exploration of a pragmatist perspective;

- to consider interdisciplinary issues and foster the conversation between French and foreign researchers; to promote an enriched and updated understanding through the discussion of international scholarship around these central questions;

- to foster and discuss the collective experience of the subject through (musical) performances and projections.

In order to meet these goals, the selection committee encourages submissions that approach the topic from interdisciplinary perspectives, in particular at the intersection of information and communication sciences, philosophy and aesthetics, media sociology, but also in relation to related disciplines such as political science, anthropology, literature, economics, etc.

The event will be held in French and English. Colleagues/ junior researchers wishing to present a paper are invited to submit a proposal before March 31, 2023 to the following email address:

genre.medias.2023@gmail.com

Proposals should include an abstract of 200-300 words (one to two pages) and a one-page CV.
